Wild Boar Fell, Mallerstang
We had an old friend, Billy, join us yesterday on a superb circular walk through the gorgeous valley of Mallerstang.
Starting from Cotegill Bridge, we headed through the meadows of Aisgill and Hanging Lund to Hazelgill. We then passed under the railway bridge and began the ascent following the Pennine Bridleway up to High Dolphinsty before turning off to continue the climb to the rocky outcrop known as The Nab.
From here we continue up to the summit of Wild Boar Fell where we enjoyed outstanding 360 degree views of the Yorkshire Dales, Three Peaks, the Howgill Fells and South Lake District fells.
From the Trig Point on Wild Boar Fell we then crossed the summit and headed for the ridge edge to look at the impressive cairns before traversing down and around The Band - an imposing amphitheatre above Aisgill Head.
Following this was a mildly short, but very steep grassy climb to the summit of neighbouring Swarth Fell, where the views were equally impressive!
Finally, we headed down the poorly marked path Stubbing Rigg back to the road and then walked the short stretch of road back to the car at Cotegill Bridge.
This was an absolutely wonderful walk and the weather was perfect; dry throughout, warm and sunny with a cool breeze as we sweated and pounded our way up to The Nab and summit of Wild Boar Fell.
