Wold Fell & Arten Gill, Dentdale
Today with the doggies we revisited a walk we did early last year - and one of our favourites. A 5 mile circular walk around the hulk of Wold Fell and down the Pennine Bridleway sandwiched between the northern slopes of Wold Fell's Slatefell Scar and the equally steep slopes of Dent Fell.
Starting from the lay-by beneath Dent Head Viaduct, we followed the road east towards Newby Head Gate before turning left off the road and through the gate on to the Pennine Bridleway up towards the summit of Wold Fell.
We stopped for lunch and a coffee on the ridge of the western slopes that over look Widdale, and the long stretch of road that links Ingleton and Hawes. Despite there being very little wind, it was bitterly cold and there was plenty of snow on the ground. So we kept our lunch break to a minimum and continued on with our walk.
At the head of Arten Gill, last time we continued up to the summit of Great Knoutberry, however, it was very cold and we were at risk of losing light so we decided to turn left and follow the Pennine Bridleway downhill along Arten Gill and underneath the impressive Arten Gill viaduct.
It is a good job we cut the walk short as the bridleway back down to the road resembled a glacier - in places the entire track was solid sheet ice - so we had to take it very steady and stick to the heavy ground to the side of the track to safely make our way down.
Once back on the road, we walked the road alongside the pretty river that was very frozen in many parts, and returned to the car.
